Protect OEB's Students & Teachers

The Issue

As concerned parents of students attending Octavia E. Butler Magnet in Pasadena, CA, we are deeply troubled by the current and planned budget cuts affecting our school. Our children deserve access to high-quality education across all core subjects, yet recent decisions have imperiled their academic experience. Our demands:

1) It's imperative that we immediately institute a moratorium on further budget cuts to Octavia E. Butler Magnet. These cuts not only threaten the standard of education we strive to provide but also greatly affect the morale of the students and teachers who work tirelessly every day. Education is the foundation of our children's future, and any compromise on this front is simply unacceptable.

2) Further exacerbating the situation is the dire need for a second full-time, credentialed science teacher. Science is a crucial component of the modern curriculum, and inadequately staffed classes only hinder our children from reaching their full potential. Ensuring that we have dedicated and specialized staff will enhance the learning environment and better prepare students for future challenges.

3) Equity in education is not merely a goal but a necessity. It is crucial for the district to commit to equitable staffing allocations across all core subjects, guaranteeing that OEB students receive the same high-quality instruction as other schools in the district. Equity ensures that no school is left behind and that every child has the opportunity to excel.

By signing this petition, you are supporting a fair educational environment for all students at Octavia E. Butler Magnet. Let's protect the educational foundation of our community and ensure that our children receive the best possible education today, so they are prepared to lead tomorrow. Sign our petition and join us in advocating for our children's future.

Thank you for your advocacy for OEB. I was informed by district staff that there is a science teacher position posted on Ed Join - below was the response from HR. Our system is very broken if students are several weeks behind due to this delay. I will follow up with UTP to confirm what is stated below. Thank you, Tina Fredericks Response from HR: "Currently, OEB has one single subject credentialed science teacher, with a second single subject science teacher approved for hire. It is posted on Edjoin; recruitment was delayed due to HR’s statutory requirement to offer the position to single subject science credentialed teachers on the 39 month rehire/layoff list. The laid off teacher was unresponsive to multiple attempts to contact him, and recruitment for the position could not commence until this process was completed."
