Protect Oakleigh Mall - "No to 12-16 Storey High Rise Buildings !"
The issue
Eaton Mall is more than a shopping strip—it's the beating heart of Oakleigh’s Greek cultural heritage. A beloved gathering place, its vibrant café scene and fresh food retailers attract locals and visitors alike, creating a unique village square atmosphere that thrives year-round, especially in warmer months.
But this cherished precinct is under threat.
The Victorian Government plans to override Monash Council’s authority and approve blanket 12–16 storey high-rise developments along the mall and surrounding streets. These generic towers will cast deep shadows, blocking sunlight and erasing the open-air charm that defines Oakleigh’s cultural identity.
Worse still, existing buildings will be demolished to make way for construction. Retailers and hospitality venues will face years of disruption, road closures, and noise—many may not survive. The surrounding residential zones from North Road to Dandenong Road will also be rezoned for 4–6 storey apartments, permanently altering the character of the area.
This is not thoughtful development. It’s a one-size-fits-all approach that ignores the cultural, social, and economic value of Oakleigh Mall.
Join us in standing up for Oakleigh. Sign the petition to stop the destruction of this iconic precinct before planning changes are ratified in February 2026.
On the above map, Red is 12 storeys, Dark Red is 16 storeys, Dark Purple is 4-6 storeys, Light Purple is up to 4 storeys !
