Protect, Not Neglect: Calling to end animal abandonment and cruelty
The Issue
Animal neglect and cruelty have become serious and widespread issues, not just in communities, but across many communities worldwide. Year after year, the number of stray animals continues to rise. In particular, cats and dogs are abandoned on the streets, where they suffer from hunger, injury, and abuse.
The Growing of Crisis
Furthermore, an example is within our barangay/village, residents claim to witness the acts, seeing riders and bikers drop off strange looking plastic bags and while investigating to see what's inside, they find it is contained with animals that are meant to be abandoned. There are also times in the streets that cats who roam are spotted with visible wounds, like patches of missing fur on the parts of their body to the point the skin of it is exposed. There are also dogs, limping, with some walking with only 1 leg or 1 arm appearing to be maimed, on one occasion, I saw a bystander beating a dog who was just passing by, which could mean these wounds are possibly inflicted by not an another dog but a man.
To address this issue, we, urge the local government and our community to take immediate steps to protect these animals. these include taking action on:
- Installing of Cameras
by installing cameras throughout the barangay, it can help catch the ones responsible for abandoning the animals as well as know where they usually drop them off in order to pick them up fast and rescue them. - Creating protection laws for the animals
strict policies and penalties for individuals, holding individuals accountable and making them face their appropriate consequences can decrease future cases of cruelty and abandonment. - Building of pounds and shelters
We also propose the building of shelters for the animals in need in order for them to have a proper place to be transferred to when rescued. - Awareness campaigns
Creating campaigns to raise awareness for the animals and to educate people for proper pet ownership can significantly help the animals for their welfare as well as if the resident has plans to abandon the animal, they can surrender it safely so that it wont end up astray or abandoned or in worse case experience harm.
By taking the actions outlined above, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of countless animals in our community. We urge our local government, residents, and animal welfare organizations to act now. Let’s work together to end animal cruelty and abandonment in our barangay.
Come join us and help us build a safer environment for our furry friends that are experiencing bad treatments, we protect not neglect.
