As a devoted birder, I have been to the South Padre Island Convention Center hundreds of times.  The habitat serves as a vital refuge for countless bird species, many of which are migratory and depend on the sanctuary provided by native vegetation around the South Padre Island Convention Center. Over the years, thousands of birders flock to this area to witness the phenomenon that takes place here. This area ranks in the top 3 in the United States on Ebird with the most species of birds being seen!  How lucky we are! We are the heart of the central fly zone for birds! We do not ask them to come, the birds grace us on their own!  Since birds cannot speak for themselves, it is incumbent upon us, their human advocates, to amplify their plight.

Recent proposals for expansion at the South Padre Island Convention Center threaten the delicate balance of this precious ecosystem. The removal of native vegetation/habitat to accommodate expansion plans poses a severe risk to the birds.  Native plants are not just ‘green spaces’ – they are complex ecosystems that sustain life, offer shelter, and provide food resources that are imperative for the survival of bird populations. Millions of birds fly over and or land in this area each spring and fall migration. 

According to numerous studies, including those published by the National Audubon Society, the removal of native vegetation leads to habitat fragmentation, a significant threat to biodiversity. Habitat loss is the primary cause of species decline, making it crucial to preserve these areas intact. Moreover, data from The Nature Conservancy highlights how small patches of native habitat, like those at South Padre Island, support a disproportionately large number of bird species.

While the prospect of growth and development may seem appealing, we must pursue expansion strategies that are environmentally sustainable.  Alternatives such as redesigning the proposed plans and focusing on the renovation and optimization of current structures should be prioritized over outright habitat destruction.

Why such disregard for nature and this natural resource that should be treasured? There are always options or alternatives. Habitat from 1997 cannot be brought back. We don't need a bird tower. Whoever suggested it doesn't know that the birds are on trees, branches, shrubs and like to dig in the ground under those bushes.  I urge the South Padre Island Convention Center management and local authorities/board members/city and county commissioners, to pause any expansion plans that include the removal of native vegetation/habitat and work with the birding community to come up with a plan.
