The Issue

Alarmingly high Native American violence/death rates have existed throughout the history of the United States and continue today due to inadequate actions by many people, including the government. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NACDV), “American Indian and Alaska Native women experience extremely high rates of domestic violence, physical and sexual assault, and murder.”This is important because too many people are both physically and psychologically harmed in ways that are very detrimental to good health.

The U.S. government can help decrease the violence and death rates of Native Americans but needs to take action immediately! Currently, as the NCADV states, “American Indians are 3 times more likely to experience sexual violence than any other ethnic group. Over half of American Indian women report having experienced sexual assault.” This is important because no one should be treated so horribly.  If they aren’t helped immediately then it can cause serious mental health issues and a lot of trauma. Therefore Congress must act now!

Tell Congress that they must:

*Create a law giving tribal lands jurisdiction over non-native offenders who commit felonies on tribal lands.

*Create a law that allows tribal governments to cooperate with the U.S. government to punish non-native offenders.

*Create a law that prevents perpetrators from getting away with crimes committed on tribal land.
