The Issue

For the past nine years, I have witnessed the beauty and fragility of nature through raising and releasing Monarch butterflies. This endeavor opened my eyes to the delicate balance required for their survival, a balance that is currently threatened by indiscriminate mowing along roadsides and the pervasive use of pesticides and herbicides. Having watched these majestic creatures struggle, I feel compelled to be their voice.

Monarch butterflies, known for their incredible migration across entire continents, are now facing a steep decline. According to the World Wildlife Fund, the population of eastern Monarchs has plummeted by over 80% in recent years. A significant factor contributing to this decline is habitat loss, especially during their migration. The roadsides, which once provided a haven of milkweed and nectar plants essential for their breeding and sustenance, are being stripped bare by poorly timed mowing schedules.

All along  their migratory path through Canada and the United States these roadside areas are critically important. By simply adjusting the timing of mowing — specifically delaying until after the migration season — we can save thousands of Monarchs. Furthermore, reducing the use of pesticides and herbicides will allow essential plants to thrive, providing food and habitat for Monarch butterflies.

It is crucial that local, provincial  and state governments along the Monarch's migratory route adopt policies that support pollinator-friendly practices. This includes revising mowing schedules, and integrating Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies to minimize pesticide usage. Educational programs can also empower communities to become stewards of their local environments, fostering a network of safe havens for Monarchs and other pollinators.

The Monarch butterfly is an iconic symbol of transformation and beauty. Its survival is a reflection of our commitment to the environment and biodiversity. By supporting this petition, you can help ensure future generations witness the wonder of a thriving Monarch population.
