The Issue

My name is Criminalized Victim, and I want to share my story about the lasting damage that a public mugshot can cause to someone's life long before they're proven guilty of any crime. Recently, I became a victim of domestic abuse, which is a deeply personal and traumatizing experience. Instead of receiving the support I needed, I was arrested, and my mugshot was plastered online without any context. Now, the charges against me are being dismissed—an acknowledgment that I did not deserve to be labeled guilty. Unfortunately, the harm was already done.

The public mugshot created a narrative of guilt that influenced how people viewed me, impacting both my personal and professional life. The truth about what happened to me became a secondary concern—the mugshot spoke volumes before I ever had my day in court. This is not just my story. In Minnesota, and across the nation, countless individuals face public scrutiny and damage to their reputations due to the release of mugshots after arrest but before a conviction, which contravenes the fundamental principle of "innocent until proven guilty."

Releasing these mugshots prematurely serves no public safety interest. Instead, it stigmatizes, isolates, and dehumanizes individuals who have been denied the right to defend themselves adequately. The current system amplifies the trauma for victims of abuse and mistakenly accused individuals. It's time to put a halt to an unjust practice that punishes the innocent by association.

I call upon Minnesota state legislators to pass legislation that will restrict the publication of mugshots until after a conviction. By doing so, we can prevent further emotional and social harm to members of our community who are already navigating the complexities and challenges of the legal system. This won't just protect individuals—it will re-establish faith in our justice system, ensuring it operates fairly and upholds respect for privacy and dignity.

Please sign this petition to demand that our state lawmakers take action to protect those who have yet to be found guilty from unnecessary public humiliation and lifelong consequences. Together, we can drive meaningful change, one signature at a time.
