The Issue

Without a red light at the intersection of Highway 60 and Highway 158 in Midland, TX, every day becomes a perilous journey for my family. This route is essential for us, connecting us to work, school, and even basic necessities like grocery shopping. The lack of traffic control poses not only an inconvenience but also a significant danger, with traffic accidents becoming alarmingly frequent at this unregulated crossroad.

Statistics from local traffic reports reveal a disturbing pattern at this intersection, with accident rates rising by nearly 30% over the past two years (source: Midland Traffic Department Report 2021-2023). Despite numerous complaints and minor fixes, there has been no substantial action taken by the local government to address the core issue – the absence of a red light.

In urban planning, intersections without proper traffic regulation, such as red lights, are proven to be significantly more dangerous, often leading to fatal accidents. A red light at Highway 60 and Highway 158 will not only streamline traffic but will also greatly enhance the safety for all users, including pedestrians and cyclists, who are at even greater risk.

We call upon the Midland City Council and relevant traffic authorities to prioritize the safety and wellbeing of local residents by installing a traffic light at this hazardous junction. Implementing a red light here is a straightforward yet crucial step in preventing accidents and saving lives.

Join us in urging the authorities to take immediate, life-saving action. Sign this petition to demand the installation of a red light at the intersection of Highway 60 and Highway 158 today. Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone in Midland.

The Decision Makers

Lori Blong
Midland City Mayor
Responded
Hello Petition Supporters, A petition signer recently contacted Mayor Lori Blong to express their support for the petition and request a response. Below is the reply they received from Mayor Blong and the City Manager—we hope you find the information useful. Mayor Blong: Thank you for reaching out to me with your concerns. We do have an effort already underway to place a traffic light at this intersection but, as this deals with a state highway, TXDOT has the primary authority to manage the funding and timeline. We work closely with TXDOT on projects like this. I am copying our City Management team so that they can provide you additional details for several signalized intersections along Hwy 158. I do think a public communication effort about the traffic management efforts along Hwy 158 is a good idea. This corridor impacts people, not only from those surrounding neighborhoods, but also from all across the Permian. I am copying Stewart Doreen, from our Communications Team, so that he can participate in this discussion as well and see how we might effectively communicate out. Lori Blong City of Midland Mayor ________________ City Manager's Response: Mayor, Will follow up with TxDOT to get a clearer understanding of the project timeline and keep the community informed as updates become available. To [Petition Supporter] - thank you for taking the time to raise this concern—it reflects exactly the kind of constructive dialogue we value as we work to improve safety along critical corridors like Hwy 158. The mayor is very hands on and has made safety a priority. As you mentioned, we have several efforts underway to install traffic lights. Let us get a good timeline to you soon!
