Protect Michigan's Clean Energy Law — Stop the Republican Rollback

Protect Michigan's Clean Energy Law — Stop the Republican Rollback
The Issue
Michigan fought hard for a cleaner energy future. In 2023, state lawmakers passed landmark legislation requiring Michigan utilities to reach 100% clean energy by 2040 — reducing pollution, creating jobs, and protecting ratepayers from the volatile price swings of fossil fuels. Now, Republican legislators want to undo it.
House Bills 5710 and 5711, introduced in the Michigan Legislature, would eliminate the state's clean and renewable energy standards, gut energy efficiency programs that save consumers money, and slash the ability of rooftop solar owners to sell power back to the grid. The bills would also strip funding from nonprofit groups that have saved ratepayers hundreds of millions of dollars by challenging utility rate hikes — redirecting that money away from independent advocates.
Supporters of these bills claim clean energy mandates are driving up electricity prices. But Michigan's two largest utilities, DTE Energy and Consumers Energy, have said their plans to meet the state's renewable energy targets will not require a surcharge on ratepayers. Meanwhile, wind and solar are among the lowest-cost options for new electricity generation — and they protect Michigan families from sudden spikes in gas and coal prices driven by global events beyond our control.
This isn't about affordability. It's about protecting fossil fuel interests at the expense of Michigan families and the planet.
We are calling on the Michigan Legislature to reject HB 5710 and HB 5711 and preserve Michigan's commitment to 100% clean energy by 2040. Our clean energy future is worth fighting for.
