The Issue

Michigan children deserve protection BEFORE sexual abuse happens.

UPDATE: A Legislative Proposal Has Been Drafted to send to our State Representatives

Since starting this petition, I’ve begun communicating with Michigan state representatives and their offices about strengthening our laws against intentional child grooming.

I’ve also drafted the Proposed Michigan Child Grooming Prevention Act, drawing from existing grooming legislation in Louisiana and Illinois.

My proposal calls for:

A standalone felony addressing repeated, intentional predatory romantic grooming of minors under 18.
Protection against deliberate manipulation, secrecy, and inappropriate romantic relationships, even without sexually explicit messages or physical contact.
Enhanced penalties for coaches, teachers, and other adults who exploit positions of trust.
Clear safeguards to protect innocent conversations and legitimate, age-appropriate relationships.
Michigan already has laws addressing solicitation and enticement. My goal is to have lawmakers examine whether those laws adequately address the deliberate grooming process that can happen before explicit sexual solicitation.

This is a proposed legislative framework, not an introduced bill. I’m asking Michigan lawmakers and legislative counsel to review it and help determine how these protections could be written into law.

I’m just one Michigan mom trying to make a difference, but with enough support, we can make sure this issue gets the attention it deserves.

Protect Michigan Children BEFORE Abuse Occurs.

Sexual grooming doesn’t always begin with physical contact. It can begin with private messages, manipulation, secrecy, inappropriate emotional relationships, and adults exploiting a child’s trust.

By the time physical sexual abuse occurs, the damage may already be done.

We are calling on Michigan lawmakers to introduce and pass legislation making intentional sexual grooming of a minor a standalone felony offense, even when physical sexual contact has not occurred.

We are demanding legislation that:

Makes intentionally grooming a child for sexual exploitation a felony.
Covers grooming through texting, social media, online communication, and in-person interactions.
Establishes enhanced penalties for adults who abuse positions of trust, including coaches, teachers, mentors, and other authority figures.
Gives law enforcement a legal avenue to intervene before physical sexual abuse occurs.
Clearly defines criminal grooming and requires evidence of sexual exploitation intent to protect against wrongful accusations.

This is not about political parties. This is about our children.

A child’s protection should not depend on whether an adult has already crossed the line into physical sexual abuse.

We are asking the Michigan House of Representatives, Michigan Senate, and Governor to take action.

Protect Michigan children. Close the gaps in our laws. Make intentional child sexual grooming a felony.

Sign and share this petition. Our children deserve protection before they become victims.
