Protect Medical Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill in New Jersey

The Issue

In 2019, the State of New Jersey passed the Medical Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act (MAID), which provides qualifying individuals the ability to legally obtain and take prescription medication to end their lives peacefully/immediately vs. having to potentially suffer as they experience the final stages of a terminal illness. New Jersey is one of ten states (in addition to the District of Columbia) that currently allow for medical aid in dying for the terminally ill, with 17 others reviewing similar legislation this year (https://deathwithdignity.org/states/)

This option helps ensure that individuals facing difficult, possibly painful deaths, have access to medically supervised options that allow them to die with dignity, with as little pain as possible. This not only helps give patients autonomy in their final days, but alleviates the anguish of the families forced to watch them suffer.

This year, Republican Assemblymember Robert Auth introduced A407, an amendment that would repeal the New Jersey Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act. Auth also introduces A406, a bill designed to further intimidate physicians or patients from seeking the law by increasing penalties for fraud or coercion, even though no instances of fraud or abuse have ever occurred, not just in New Jersey, but in all states where medical aid in dying is legal. Time is ticking before a decision is made on whether to repeal MAID in NJ. Please help protect patients' right to die with dignity today by signing this petition asking for Bills A407 and A406 not to be passed.
