The Issue

Stop the Expansion of McKinney National Airport to Protect the Aviation Academy

As a student in the McKinney ISD Aviation Academy, I’m deeply concerned about how the proposed expansion of McKinney National Airport could threaten this unique and life-changing program. The Academy is one of the top Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs in the district, with over 200 students enrolled each year. It provides real-world aviation experience and hands-on training that prepares us for future careers in the skies—opportunities we can’t find anywhere else.

The expansion includes a 45,000-square-foot commercial terminal and plans to bring commercial flights to McKinney by the end of 2026. While it's being promoted as a step forward for the local economy, it risks dismantling programs like ours that already offer real, measurable benefits to students.

This kind of development could harm our education system, limit opportunities for future students, and undermine the values that make McKinney special. According to recent surveys, around 60% of residents are opposed to the expansion—clearly, this plan does not reflect the will of the community.

I’m calling on city leaders to stand with students and pursue smarter, more balanced growth that protects our education, our future, and the integrity of our community. Please help us protect the McKinney ISD Aviation Academy before it’s too late.
