Lonesome Dove is a masterpiece. Please don’t remake it.

Larry McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove has earned a special place in the history of Western storytelling. The novel and the beloved television miniseries have stood the test of time because of their unforgettable characters, powerful storytelling, humor, tragedy, and authenticity.

We understand the desire to bring this world to a new generation, and we absolutely want more Lonesome Dove. What we are asking is that the original story be preserved rather than remade.

Dead Man’s Walk, Comanche Moon, and Streets of Laredo have already been adapted for television, and none received the same lasting acclaim or cultural impact as Lonesome Dove. If there is a desire to revisit those stories, there is plenty of room to remake and improve upon them with modern production quality.

But Lonesome Dove itself does not need to be fixed.

We are asking studios, producers, and rights holders to leave the original Lonesome Dove story intact. Don’t rewrite its characters. Don’t modernize its themes. Don’t replace what made it special.

Give us more stories from this incredible universe. Give us new adventures, expanded stories, or faithful new adaptations of the lesser-known chapters. Give a new generation the opportunity to discover what made Lonesome Dove so special in the first place.

There is a difference between expanding a legacy and replacing it.

Protect the masterpiece. Expand the world.
