City and County Say They Are Still Waiting on July Data Before Taking Further Action

Questions about the future of the Panola County Transfer Station continue, and after requesting updates from both City of Carthage and Panola County officials this week, both agencies say they are still waiting before making any decisions.

The responses come after weeks of public concern over possible changes to transfer station operations and residential hauling. Since the issue first surfaced, many taxpayers have asked whether any agreements have been reached or whether plans have changed.

After reaching out to both County Judge Rodger McLane and City Manager Brooke Lipsey, here is what I was able to confirm.

According to Panola County Commissioner Rodger McLane, county officials agreed to wait until both June and July had passed before evaluating transfer station usage.

McLane stated that approximately 270 tons were collected during June and said officials are waiting until August, when July’s figures are available, before determining the average volume. He also said no formal studies have been ordered and no formal discussions have taken place at this point.

In response to questions about the same issue, City Manager Brooke Lipsey provided a similar update.

Lipsey stated that the City has been evaluating the issue through the end of July and intends to review July’s data before moving forward. She also said no amendments or agreements have been approved since the matter was last discussed publicly and that additional discussions are expected after the July information has been reviewed.

At this point, the City and County are publicly stating that:

They are waiting for July transfer station data.
No formal study has been commissioned.
No new agreement has been approved.
No operational changes have been publicly announced.
While those are the responses provided by both agencies, several questions remain unanswered.

Officials have not indicated what criteria will ultimately be used to determine whether changes are made, what level of usage would justify any operational changes, or whether additional public input will be sought before decisions are made.

As of the date of this article, no supporting reports, studies, or analyses have been identified by either agency beyond the collection of monthly tonnage data.

Because this issue directly affects taxpayers who rely on the transfer station, I will continue requesting updates and public records as additional information becomes available. If future meetings are scheduled, agreements are proposed, or new records are released, those developments will be reported so the public can evaluate the information for themselves.
