Panola County Transfer Station – A Major Development

The June 30, 2026 Panola County Commissioners Court agenda includes an item that could have a significant impact on the future of the Panola County Transfer Station.

Agenda Item #11 states:

“To discuss and act upon accepting the Notice of Termination of Interlocal Agreement for the Management and Operation of Solid Waste Transfer Station with the City of Carthage.”

This is a significant development. Over the past several weeks, many citizens were told by both County and City officials that they were working toward a solution that would once again allow local residential haulers to use the transfer station. Throughout this process, the public was led to believe that negotiations were ongoing and that a resolution was being pursued.

Now, without any public announcement that those negotiations had ended, the Commissioners Court is being asked to discuss and potentially accept a Notice of Termination of the agreement governing the transfer station.

This raises important questions:              What changed?                                                    When did negotiations end?                           Why has the discussion shifted from finding a solution to terminating the agreement?                                                              What does this mean for the future of the transfer station and the citizens of Panola County?

While we do not yet know what action the Commissioners Court will ultimately take, this is the first time the possible termination of the current interlocal agreement has appeared on a public agenda. The outcome could affect how the transfer station is managed in the future and could have a direct impact on residents, local businesses, and residential haulers.

We are not asking for conflict. We are asking for transparency.

If negotiations have ended, the public deserves to know why. If the agreement is being terminated, the public deserves to know what comes next before decisions are made that affect taxpayers and waste disposal services throughout Panola County.

If you support transparency, accountability, and a fair solution for our community, please attend the meeting and let your voice be heard.
