Little Manatee South is worth protecting.

The Little Manatee South planning area isn't just open land waiting to be developed. It's 23,000 acres of farms, wetlands, wildlife habitat, and natural flood protection stretching from the Little Manatee River to the Manatee County line.

Yet it's now being considered for urban expansion.

Hillsborough County Commissioners and other Florida elected officials need to stop approving the destruction of rural land when there is no demonstrated need for urban expansion.

Every time wetlands are filled and farmland is replaced with subdivisions, we lose more than scenery.

We lose natural flood protection.

We lose clean water.

We lose wildlife habitat.

We lose the working lands that help feed our communities.

The science is clear. 

Wetlands absorb stormwater, filter pollutants, recharge our aquifer, and protect nearby communities from flooding. 

Converting these lands into roads, rooftops, and parking lots increases runoff into the Little Manatee River and Cockroach Bay, fragments wildlife habitat, and places even greater pressure on already vulnerable ecosystems.

Hillsborough County's own planning studies identify large portions of Little Manatee South as environmentally sensitive because of its floodplains, wetlands, wildlife corridors, and water resources.

Once these natural systems are destroyed, they are gone forever.

Growth should be responsible, strategic, and based on genuine need, not driven by the mentality that every remaining rural acre should eventually become another subdivision.

Florida doesn't need endless sprawl. It needs leaders willing to protect the natural resources that sustain our communities.

Little Manatee South is worth protecting. Once it's gone, we can't build it back.
