Scottsdale Unified School District's own safety records show close to 400 reported incidents of bullying, harassment, and violence among students across the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years. District logs count more than 150 of those reports as assaults, with close to 70 involving sexual misconduct or harassment. Despite that volume, the district's own records show only 10 incidents where staff logged any time spent investigating or responding, and most of those got just a single hour.

Arizona school districts don't track whether students in these incidents are LGBTQ+, but state and national research shows queer and transgender students face disproportionate rates of physical and sexual violence at school. A 2021 survey by the LGBTQ+ advocacy group GLSEN found that roughly one in ten LGBTQ+ young people in the state had experienced a physical assault at school tied to their sexual orientation. When a school's response process barely registers, students who already fear they won't be believed have even less reason to come forward.

"If your school counselor is somebody who is potentially anti-LGBTQ … it's likely they're not going to be giving resources for LGBTQ+ organizations, and so even being able to reach students is an issue," said Carrie Eutizi, a sexual violence response coordinator with the Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence. Scottsdale Unified's School Board and Superintendent must close the gap between what students report and what the district actually investigates. That means documented response times for every safety report, independent review of cases involving assault or sexual misconduct, and public reporting on outcomes each semester.
