Petition updateProtect Legal Certainty in Swedish Citizenship ReformPublic Pressure Works: Migration Agency Softens Harsh Migration Policies

The Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) announced a major policy shift on several controversial migration issues. This has been widely described in Swedish media as a “U-turn” after months of criticism and legal uncertainty.

Here are the key points of the change:

1. Teen deportations

The agency said it will pause or reassess deportations of certain teenagers who arrived in Sweden as minors but turned 18 during the asylum process.

Many of these cases involved youths who had lived in Sweden for several years.

Courts and lawyers had criticised the earlier strict deportation practice.

2. Track change after asylum (Spårbyte)

Previously, many asylum seekers who found jobs were denied the possibility to switch to a work permit after a rejected asylum claim.

Now the agency says it will allow more flexibility for “track change”, meaning:

If a person gets a valid job offer,

They may be able to apply for a work permit instead of being deported.

3. Permanent residence permits (PUT)

The agency clarified that permanent residence permits will generally not be revoked retroactively in cases where:

The permit was granted under older rules, and

there is no fraud or serious wrongdoing.

This clarification came after fears that thousands of immigrants might lose their permanent residency under stricter interpretations of the law.

Why this happened?

The shift followed:

Legal criticism from courts and lawyers

Public debate and media scrutiny

Concerns that the earlier interpretations were too strict and legally questionable

Thank you and if you believe in fair and humane migration policies, please share this petition with your friends, family, and networks. The more signatures we gather, the stronger our collective voice becomes.

Best wishes,

Musab
