Protect Lebanon's archaeological sites from war

The Issue

As a Lebanese citizen, I believe our archaeological and historical sites are more than national treasures—they are part of humanity's shared heritage. Their destruction would be an irreversible loss for Lebanon and for future generations worldwide. That is why I am calling for their protection.

Lebanon is rich in history, boasting an incredible array of archaeological sites that date back thousands of years. From the majestic ruins of Baalbek, acknowledged by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, to the ancient city of Byblos, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world—these landmarks are not merely stones and columns; they are the stories of our ancestors and the foundation of our cultural identity.

Unfortunately, the persistent threats of regional conflicts and wars put these invaluable treasures at risk. During times of unrest, these sites have suffered damages that took away irreplaceable artifacts and historical context. For instance, the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria saw significant destruction during regional conflicts, and the unfortunate reality is that Lebanon could face similar threats without proactive measures.

We must come together to urge international and local authorities, including UNESCO, the Lebanese government, and global heritage organizations, to prioritize the safeguarding of these sites. A multifaceted approach can be employed that includes:

1. Strengthening international collaborations to ensure constant monitoring and sharing of expertise on best practices for site security.

2. Implementing stricter laws and harsher penalties against acts of vandalism and destruction of historical sites.

3. Providing funding and resources for the preservation and restoration of sites that have already been damaged.

4. Raising awareness through educational campaigns on the importance of these sites to the Lebanese people and to humanity at large.

Our heritage forms the bedrock of our society and it is our responsibility to protect it not just for us, but for all future generations. Please sign this petition to show your support for the protection of Lebanon's archaeological and historical sites from war and destruction.
