As a tribal member of Lac Courte Oreilles, my heart aches to see our precious land and water at risk due to irresponsible septic dumping and the use of PFAS near our beloved community water tower and casino. For the past five years, our community has been blind to the migration of PFAS through our waterways, threatening not only our health but also the legacy we leave for our children.

The stakes are incredibly high. Studies show that PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are linked to numerous health issues, including high cholesterol, liver damage, and even cancer. Yet, despite the known dangers, some entities downplay these risks, falsely assuring us of the safety of our drinking water. As people of this land, we must stand united to demand better protection of our needed resources. As this also affects our Manoomin (wild rice) in our local water beds. 

Our water tower, vital for the entire community, is alarmingly close to these dumping grounds — less than a mile away. Even more concerning is the practice of spraying PFAS under the guise of 'blocking' septic waste or misleadingly labeling it as 'manure.' Such practices are reckless and unacceptable, compromising the safety and future of our families.

There is strength in our community if we stick up for one another. We can change this dumping by advocating for stricter regulations on the disposal of hazardous waste and the use of PFAS chemicals. We call upon local authorities and environmental agencies to conduct  inspections and enforce penalties against violators. Additionally, we urge the implementation of water testing procedures to ensure the purity and safety of our water supply with proof for community members.
