Protect Independent Businesses like Tans Coffee:Demand Fair Licensing for Small Businesses
The Issue
Tan’s Coffee Box is a small, independent business serving coffee, kindness, and connection from the grounds of St Luke’s Church in Cheltenham. It’s more than just a coffee stop — it’s a local hub that brings people together, supports community wellbeing, and provides a safe, friendly space for everyone, including NHS staff from the nearby hospital.
Now, unfair licensing demands from Cheltenham Borough Council are putting this much-loved community space at risk. Despite originally being advised differently by the council, we’re now being told to comply with a costly and rigid licensing structure that was never made clear at the start.
We believe that small, community-focused businesses like Tan’s Coffee Box deserve support, not bureaucracy that threatens their survival.
We’re calling on Cheltenham Borough Council to review and revise their approach to small traders operating on private land — especially those providing clear social and community benefit.
The unfair and high Licensing fees are crippling small business like this. Yes we are fighting for Tans Coffee Box but we also want to bring this to the publics attention so that in turn all small businesses can receive help.
Please sign and share this petition if you believe in protecting the heart of our neighbourhoods and standing up for fairness, clarity, and community enterprise.
