Protect Independent Agencies from Political Interference
The Issue

Congress established independent federal agencies with the primary mission of serving the public interest. Their creation was grounded in insulating these entities from the ebbs and flows of political agendas that can disrupt public service initiatives. A cornerstone of this independence is appointing agency leaders for fixed terms, ensuring that they can operate with stability, accrue expertise, and maintain impartiality in their decision-making processes.
Recent events, however, have spotlighted a worrying trend. There have been concerted efforts to prematurely remove agency heads before their appointed terms have concluded. Such actions not only undermine the rule of law but pose a significant threat to the integrity and reliability of our national institutions.
This petition calls for immediate action to uphold the integrity of independent federal agencies by:
1. Ensuring that all agency leaders complete their full, statutorily defined term limits, free from undue political pressure.
2. Reinforcing robust Congressional oversight mechanisms to safeguard against unwarranted interference, thus preserving the independence and efficacy of these vital institutions.
3. Promoting transparency and accountability in the processes by which agencies and their leadership are evaluated and retained.
The independence of federal agencies is a pillar of our democracy and must be protected to ensure that they function effectively and in the best interest of the people. These actions are essential not just for the present but for safeguarding the future integrity of our institutions.
