The Issue

I need caregivers to get through daily life. That is not abstract to me, and it is not political theater. It is the reason I can stay in my home, move through my day, and live in community instead of being shut away. When I talk about disability rights being eroded, I am talking about real people losing the care and support they need to survive.

We have seen what happens when disabled people are treated like we do not belong in public life. Our history in this country includes the ugly laws, institutionalization, abuse, neglect, and isolation. Protections like the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Olmstead decision helped push this country in a more humane direction, but those protections mean very little if people cannot actually get the services that let them live at home and in their communities. If those programs are dismantled, disabled people, older adults, and families across this country will pay the price.

That is why I am calling on federal leaders to protect and strengthen home- and community-based care, and to honor the rights of disabled people to receive support in our homes instead of being pushed into institutions. We need real funding, real enforcement, and a clear commitment that disabled people will not be forced back into systems of abuse and neglect. Policy has real impacts, and the people making these decisions need to hear that our lives are not negotiable.

If you believe disabled people deserve dignity, safety, and the freedom to live in our own communities, please sign this petition. Sign because this affects me right now. Sign because it affects millions of people beyond me. Sign because disability is part of the human experience, and our common humanity depends on what we choose to protect.
