Protect Hilton Head’s Future: Fair STR Regulations, Not Overreach

Protect Hilton Head’s Future: Fair STR Regulations, Not Overreach
The Issue
Hilton Head’s property owners, managers, and residents are proud to be part of a thriving, responsible vacation-rental community that fuels our island’s $1.6 billion tourism economy, supports thousands of jobs, and sustains local businesses.
Now that the Town has moved beyond the moratorium debate, we face a new challenge: drafting updated regulations.
While we agree that safety, accountability, and consistency matter, we strongly oppose proposals that would unfairly restrict occupancy, parking, or property use beyond what is reasonable or supported by data.
What We Stand For
We urge Town Council to adopt regulations that are fair, transparent, and based on facts — not fear.
We oppose:
Arbitrary occupancy caps that prevent families from vacationing together and devalue property investments.
Unnecessary parking limits that ignore the reality that many homes were built with adequate, safe off-street parking.
One-size-fits-all restrictions that punish responsible owners and managers instead of targeting genuine problem properties.
We support:
Sensible, safety-based requirements for smoke detection, emergency plans, and compliance posting.
Strong enforcement for bad actors who consistently violate noise, trash, or nuisance ordinances.
Continued partnership between Town Council, property managers, and residents to find balanced, data-driven solutions.
Our Commitment to Respectful Dialogue
We believe that meaningful progress requires respectful, civil discourse.
This is not about “sides.” It’s about protecting what makes Hilton Head special.
We ask everyone — residents, officials, and industry professionals alike — to engage with kindness, honesty, and professionalism.
Name-calling, hostility, and division help no one.
We can disagree without being disagreeable — and when we do, the entire community benefits.
Why It Matters
Short-term rentals are part of Hilton Head’s fabric. They help families afford homeownership, generate tourism spending that funds our schools and public safety, and keep our local economy strong year-round.
Over-regulation threatens that balance — reducing tourism, driving down property values, and undermining the very character that makes Hilton Head unique.
