For the past 30 years, greyhounds have been a part of my life, cherished not just for their speed and elegance, but for their gentle and affectionate nature. Sadly, these traits make them vulnerable targets for exploitation and abuse. Greyhounds are often drugged, mistreated, and even killed, with no proper legal protection safeguarding their welfare.

Despite their incredible abilities, greyhounds suffer in silence, victims of industries that value profit over compassion. They are forced into racing, subjected to harsh living conditions, and, all too often, discarded like commodities when they are no longer 'useful'. It's heartbreaking and entirely preventable.

In the United States alone, it is estimated that thousands of greyhounds are affected each year by these barbaric practices (Humane Society, 2021). Some countries have taken steps to ban greyhound racing, recognizing the need to protect these majestic animals. Yet, without comprehensive legal protection, the future remains uncertain for these beloved creatures.

It's imperative that we act now to ensure greyhounds are recognized as a protected breed. We need legislation that enforces strict penalties for abuse and neglect, promotes adoption programs for retired greyhounds, and ultimately phases out racing and other exploitative activities.
