The community that needs improvement is the resident life at GCU. GCU needs to uphold its policies and thoroughly help students in need. Too many students have had roommate conflicts to the point that they feel unsafe in their living space or school. Many students that do bring up the conflict to the residence life are able to no longer live with the troubled individual, but what is done with the perpetrator? There is little to no consequence for those that harass their roommates. They would often remove the victim and leave the perpetrator in the room. The perpetrator can still harass the other suitemates, and the cycle won’t be broken. In extreme cases, the perpetrator would be moved to another room, but they are not held accountable for their actions. They can always cause harm to the next set of roommates. Too many incidents have been reported but not recorded or followed up, so many students are not getting the attention they need. GCU must change its system to improve the resident life of students and be stricter.

GCU also needs to uphold its student handbook policies and need to take action against the perpetrator. I have a personal experience with a former roommate that harassed her first set of roommates before living with me. Her roommates reported her, but residence life didn’t do anything and never followed up with them. My former roommate lied and said she was being harassed by them and was moved to my dorm. She harassed me severely for months and tampered with my belongings, which caused me to have severe allergic reactions. I reported the incident to resident life, but they only removed her from my room. My former roommate should’ve been expelled since she violated the student handbook multiple times and told me she will hurt me. My former roommate is still living on campus and in GCU's pep band. I always fear for the safety of her current roommates and mine. Many students have experienced something similar, but little to no action was taken to help them. This needs to change. GCU is very passive, and there have been a growing number of victims of harassment from the same few individuals. The solution to this problem is to raise awareness in the school, band with people with similar experiences, and have their voices heard. Also, to ensure that GCU follows through with its handbook and removes students violating it.

Here is what GCU needs to do:

●Uphold their student handbook policies
●React Faster to student safety
●Stop neglecting students in need of help
●Hold perpetrators accountable for their actions
●Support victims of harassment
●Improve GCU’s reaction system
●Expel problematic students that repeatedly violate the student handbook
●Record all reports from students, especially in regard to residential life
