Protect funding for the Parent Engagement Program in Illinois
The Issue
I've witnessed first-hand the incredible impact of the Parent Engagement Program in our community. Parent Mentors act as vital bridges between families and schools, fostering trust and improving both attendance and engagement. They are instrumental not only in elevating student's educational experiences but also in providing parents with meaningful paid opportunities to contribute to and grow within our community. Moreover, initiatives like Ladders of Opportunity give parents unprecedented access to real jobs, skills, and career paths in education, helping them stay engaged and move forward positively in their careers.
However, the Parent Engagement Program's future is currently at risk due to looming funding cuts. The $20 million allocated through the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and the additional $2.5 million through the Ladders of Opportunity program administered by the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) must be protected. Cutting these funds would not only undermine the progress we, as a community, have made but also halt further positive developments. These programs are more than budget line items – they are lifelines for countless families who rely on this crucial support.
Empirical evidence consistently highlights the positive results of parent involvement in student success. Research conducted by reputable organizations reveals that schools with active parental participation witness improved student grades, higher graduation rates, and better overall educational outcomes. It is paramount that we uphold these achievements by ensuring ongoing funding.
I am urging the State Board of Education Board Members and state legislators of Illinois to recognize the importance of these programs and take action. We must prioritize the Parent Engagement Program and protect its funding in the upcoming budget deliberations. The cost of inaction is simply too great, both for our communities and for the future of our children.
Sign this petition to tell our leaders that the Parent Engagement Program and the Ladders of Opportunity represent more than just numbers in a budget. They signify a brighter future for our families, schools, and the entire community of Illinois. Your support is crucial to ensure these invaluable programs continue to thrive and make a difference. Please join us in this essential cause.
