A fellow student at our Poway middle school was disciplined and had her political flag confiscated—despite peacefully expressing her support during lunch in the school quad. This action violates her First Amendment rights, which the U.S. Supreme Court has confirmed students do not lose when they enter the school grounds.

Schools should be places where students feel safe to express their opinions without fear of punishment, as long as they are not disrupting the learning environment. We call on the Poway Unified School District to respect and uphold students’ constitutional rights to free speech and ensure no student faces unfair discipline for peacefully sharing their views. Even worse the vice principal who took away the flag is believed to have a Kamala Harris flag in her room
