Protect Fort Myers' healthy trees
The Issue
Growing up in Fort Myers, I have cherished the natural beauty and tranquility offered by our abundant trees. Their lush canopies not only provide respite from the relentless Florida sun but also support diverse wildlife and enhance the quality of life in our neighborhoods. It is disheartening to witness the indiscriminate removal of these precious trees, often without adequate reason or community input.
At the heart of this issue is the current tree removal permitting process, which lacks transparency and seems to prioritize convenience over community welfare. The ease with which even a healthy tree can be removed is alarming, revealing a loophole that can be exploited to the detriment of our shared environment. These mature trees are not just plants; they are vital to reducing urban heat, filtering air pollution, managing stormwater, and maintaining the ecological balance. Their benefits are too significant for them to be removed without rigorous justification.
We acknowledge that there are instances where tree removal is necessary, such as when trees pose a direct safety threat or are severely diseased. However, what we demand is due diligence and transparency from the Fort Myers City Council and the City of Fort Myers Building, Permitting & Inspections Division when such decisions are made. We propose a more stringent evaluation process that includes public notice and input before any tree is marked for removal.
Additionally, implementing a system that requires a comprehensive assessment by qualified arborists before any tree removal permits are issued is crucial. By doing so, we can ensure that only trees that truly pose a danger are removed while preserving those that contribute to the environment and community well-being.
We call on the Fort Myers City Council to revise the current permitting process to include more stringent checks and public participation. Together, we can safeguard our urban forest and ensure a healthier, greener future for Fort Myers.
Please join me in this urgent call for change. Sign this petition to demand transparency and accountability in the preservation of Fort Myers' trees. Let’s work together to ensure our city remains a beautiful, vibrant place to live.
