Protect flexibility, choice and independence for workers in Finland
The Issue
134,000 of us earn at least some of our income through digital platforms in Finland. That is 3,9% of the working-age population according to Statistics Finland. Us professionals – graphic designers, musicians, content creators, IT service providers, delivery couriers, taxi drivers or other types of entrepreneurs – want the ability to build fulfilling livelihoods on our own terms.
Over 70% of us rely on digital platforms for extra income. Given the current cost of living crisis in Finland - with consumer prices more than 20% higher than the EU average - flexibility and multiple opportunities to earn money are essential. This is even more acute with unemployment at a record high of 10.5%, among the highest in Europe.
Our flexibility and independence are under threat
The way we choose to work and live is now under threat and depends on how the Finnish government implements the EU Platform Work Directive. This needs to be completed by 2nd December 2026 and a consultation on how this should look in Finland is open until 28th August.
Call to action
sign this petition - and spread it to your friends and colleagues - so that we can make our collective voice heard.
Sign up today to demand:
- A clear set of rules allowing us to earn money when, where and how we want
- Protection and benefits: we want flexibility and independence, but should not be treated as second-class citizens
- No forced reclassification into employment structures that we do not want
- Maintenance of the flexibility and freedom we actively choose
Finnish politicians and decision-makers need to listen to, and respect, the voice of those who are directly impacted by this legislation.
