The Issue

As a lifelong Texan deeply committed to the well-being and inclusive education of all students, I am increasingly concerned about recent laws enacted in Texas. These laws, requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in public school classrooms and prohibiting the use of preferred names and pronouns for transgender students, are not only a concern for me but are harmful to the diverse student community we have in Texas. Studies indicate that transgender youth face higher rates of mental health challenges, exacerbated by societal stigma and lack of support. Policies that prevent the recognition of their identities add to this burden, making them feel less accepted and supported in a learning environment that should nurture their growth and understanding. Additionally, mandating only one specific religious symbol such as the Ten Commandments in classrooms can marginalize students of differing faiths, making them feel alienated and less valued. The First Amendment of the United States Constitution, specifically the Establishment Clause, prohibits the government from establishing or endorsing a state religion. By forcing one specific religious symbol from only one specific faith into public classrooms and infringing on free speech through restricting the acknowledgment of students’ identities, these laws challenge the constitutional rights meant to protect all Americans. It is crucial for our lawmakers to recognize the diverse fabric of our student body and ensure that school environments remain unbiased spaces for learning and personal development without religious imposition or speech restrictions. We urge Texas legislators to reconsider and strike down these Senate bills, specifically SB10  and SB 12, that undermine First Amendment rights and negatively impact our youth and their educational experiences. Join me in insisting that the government of Texas uphold the principles of freedom and equality as enshrined in the Constitution. Let's ensure that every student, regardless of their faith or gender identity, feels valued and respected in our public schools. Sign this petition to protect the rights of all Texas students
