The Issue

My name is Safia. I'm a 6th grade student in Utah. This year I had a chance to help at the Thompson Century Farm in Spanish Fork - one of the last firefly habitat in Utah County. I've witnessed the encroaching urban sprawl, with new buildings sprouting around the farm, threatening one of the last remaining firefly habitats in Utah.

Fireflies, also known as lightning bugs, are not just enchanting; they play a vital role in our ecosystem as indicators of environmental health. Yet, their populations are declining rapidly due to habitat destruction, pollution, and light pollution, depriving our future generations of their mystical presence.

Thompson Century Farm, with its lush greenery and natural wetlands, is a rare haven for these delicate creatures. It is crucial that we act now to protect this habitat before it's too late. By protecting this area, we are not only conserving an essential part of our natural heritage, but we are also preserving the ecological balance that these insects help maintain.

I believe my voice can make a difference, but I need your support. Let us stand together in urging the local government and developers to consider sustainable development practices. This involves creating buffer zones around farming land, implementing environmentally-friendly building regulations, and promoting awareness about the importance of preserving our natural habitats.

Your support is crucial. Sign the petition today and help ensure that the glowing dance of fireflies is not lost to progress but preserved for our children to marvel at, just as we have
