Protect Farm Animals from Cruelty at the Pennsylvania Farm Show

The Issue

Every January, thousands of Pennsylvanians gather at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg to celebrate agriculture, food, and community. But behind the butter sculpture and livestock competitions, there is a reality we cannot ignore.

Many of the animals displayed at the Farm Show are confined in tight stalls, surrounded by loud crowds and bright lights, with no way to retreat or rest. Some are young, vulnerable, or nearing the end of their lives. They are transported long distances, kept in unfamiliar surroundings, and often spend hours without meaningful enrichment or relief.

This is not fair to the animals, and it does not reflect the values of kindness and responsibility that Pennsylvania agriculture should stand for.

We are calling on the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture to adopt stronger animal welfare standards for all live animals exhibited at the event. Specifically, we ask for:

  • Clear limits on the number of hours animals can be on display each day
  • Quiet zones and adequate rest areas to reduce noise and stress
  • Stronger veterinary oversight and emergency response protocols
  • Prohibitions on using animals for entertainment-only purposes, such as photo booths or crowd interaction
  • Transparent public reporting on animal health, transport conditions, and outcomes after the show

The Farm Show can and should evolve to showcase the best of Pennsylvania’s farming future without compromising the wellbeing of animals.

Sign this petition to demand humane reforms at the Pennsylvania Farm Show and ensure that animal welfare is not sacrificed for spectacle.
