Protect Fair Play and the Integrity of Football: FIFA Must Investigate Argentina’s Conduct
The Issue
Football depends on fair play, respect, non-discrimination and the consistent enforcement of its rules.
We call on FIFA to open a transparent and independent investigation into serious incidents involving representatives and supporters of the Argentine national team during the FIFA World Cup.
These incidents include reported violent conduct involving members of the Argentine delegation following the final, the display of the explicitly political banner “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” after the semi-final against England, and reported allegations of racist, discriminatory and abusive conduct by sections of the Argentine support.
This petition is not directed against Argentina, its people or its supporters generally, and it does not ask FIFA to impose punishment without evidence or due process. It asks FIFA to establish the facts, determine individual and institutional responsibility, publish its principal findings and apply its rules equally to every national association.
Where serious violations are established, FIFA must impose meaningful and proportionate sanctions. These should include the possible exclusion of Argentina from the next FIFA World Cup if the investigation finds serious, repeated or institutionally tolerated conduct fundamentally incompatible with fair play and the integrity of football.
No team should be above the rules because of its sporting success, history, popularity or commercial importance.
Violence is not passion. Discrimination is not support. Political provocation is not celebration.
Protect fair play and the integrity of football. Demand transparency, equal accountability and meaningful action from FIFA.
