Only 300 years ago, giraffe roamed in great numbers across Africa.  Present-day giraffe are experiencing a silent extinction process, with their populations having decreased by 90%. Giraffe are listed as vulnerable to extinction on the IUCN’s Red List.

Currently, giraffe do not have protection from trophy hunting despite their population decline. In 2020, I requested a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) of wildlife trophy imports from Africa to the U.S. from 2015 to 2019. It revealed that 2,206 giraffe trophies were imported into the U.S. For an animal whose population has been in steep decline for numerous reasons, including human-wildlife conflict, habitat loss, and climate change, allowing giraffe to be hunted and their parts imported only stokes the fire that is already ablaze.

Fortunately, we can help the giraffe and other endangered wildlife by using our voices.  Email or call your elected federal representative and stating you would like him/her to co-sponsor the ProTECT Act, H.R. 1934, would move the needle for endangered wildlife everywhere!  The more constituents contact their federal representatives expressing their concern about endangered wildlife, the quicker we can save lives.  Be confident in your voice! You can find your representative here.

Also, consider donating or adopting a giraffe through the Giraffe Conservation Foundation today to help this gentle giant thrive for future generations.

Please sign and share this petition far and wide!  Thank you!

With gratitude,
