Protect Young Students & Low Income Seniors - Demand Tenting Toxic Site & Muffle Noise NOW
Why this petition matters

ACT NOW - THERE'S STILL TIME TO HELP BEFORE THE FULL TOXIC CLEANUP AND EARSPLITTING CONSTRUCTION RESUMES IN LATE JUNE!
TELL HOWARD HUGHES CORPORATION TO TENT THEIR TOXIC WORKSITE. KEEP YOUNG SCHOOL CHILDREN SAFE FROM DANGEROUS VAPORS AND DEMAND THE DEVELOPER DELIVER A BETTER NOISE PLAN FOR NEIGHBORING SCHOOLS, SENIORS, RESIDENTS AND WORKERS!
Sign up now to help protect hundreds of elderly and young school children from undue exposures to dangerous toxins being pulled from a former thermometer manufacturing site. Howard Hughes Corp's State subsidised cleanup and future development sits amid two early education facilities, open-air recess streets, a public playground, a park AND a low-income senior center filled with the vulnerable and infirm.
These actions - to tent the lot and to provide more robust sound monitoring / protections are supported by Congressman Jerry Nadler, State Senator Brian Kavanagh, NY State Assemblymember Yuh-Line Niou, NYC Council Member Christopher Marte and Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine. (Click here to read their co-sponsored letters to the NYSDEC & NYCDEP)
Tenting the site & creating better sound protections would:
- Significantly reduce local residents' businesses' exposure to toxic mercury vapors as they move into the full acre-wide site clean up
- Address noise that will plague the area for as many as 7 years to come as they build
- Cost a fraction of the estimated 100 million dollars in tax benefits and subsidies the developer is set to receive.
Please help us by adding your voice to and sharing this petition so that we can shame the Howard Hughes Corporation, the City and State agencies involved that we will not stand by and let children and the elderly pay with their health because a developer is too cheap to invest in REAL protections.
HHC - TENT THE MESS & MUFFLE THE NOISE!
