The Issue

Eigg Mountain is a cherished wilderness area that has been an integral part of the Antigonish County community for generations. It is a place where residents, snowmobilers, hikers, hunters, and outdoor enthusiasts experience the quiet beauty of largely untouched nature. This landscape has also become increasingly important as mainland moose — a species of conservation concern — have begun to re-establish themselves in the area. However, the proposed industrial wind development, even though planned on private land, threatens to fragment the broader Eigg Mountain–James River Wilderness Area and undermine the integrity of the surrounding protected lands. The project would permanently transform Eigg Mountain, putting its ecological health at risk and altering a landscape that so many people depend upon for recreation, connection to nature, and well-being.

Eigg Mountain is not just another piece of land; it is a vital habitat for numerous species of wildlife, many of which rely on its unique ecosystem for survival. The area includes critical bird migration routes and supports a diversity of flora and fauna. Once disrupted by industrial development, these delicate ecosystems could be irreversibly damaged.

Additionally, the residents of Antigonish County have deep cultural and historical ties to this land. For years, Eigg Mountain has served as a communal ground for outdoor activities, bringing families and neighbors together to appreciate and connect with nature. By allowing this wind project to proceed, we risk severing these vital community bonds and losing a cherished part of our heritage.

While renewable energy is crucial for sustainable future development, it should not come at the expense of important wilderness areas. We urge the decision makers to consider alternative sites for wind energy projects that do not compromise pristine wilderness or disrupt the lives of those who depend on these areas.

We, the undersigned, call on the relevant authorities to protect Eigg Mountain and halt the proposed wind project immediately. Allowing this development to move forward would set a troubling precedent for other wilderness areas in the region and beyond. Please join us in protecting Eigg Mountain for current and future generations. Sign this petition now and help preserve this irreplaceable natural treasure.
