Thank you to everyone for your continued support. Yesterday we met with Fianna Fáil councillors Maryrose Desmond, Sean Martin and Terry Shannon at the proposed rezoning site at Moneygourney to discuss the future of the 42-acre SSO1 SE2 site.

With the crops swaying in the breeze before us, it was a timely reminder of exactly what is at stake and why so many local residents care so deeply about the future of this land and our community.

The Fianna Fáil councillors acknowledged the significant traffic, infrastructure and capacity challenges that already exist across Douglas and Rochestown. We stressed that it would be irresponsible to approve the rezoning of a further 42 acres for a large-scale housing development before understanding the real impact of all the developments that are already approved or under construction.

There are currently approximately 2,725–2,925 homes approved or under construction in the wider area, representing an estimated 6,838–7,313 new residents, before a single home is built on this greenbelt site. In neighbouring Carrigaline, a further 1,750–1,950 homes are also in the pipeline, with additional rezoning process now underway.

On top of this, the M28 motorway is currently under construction and, once operational, will fundamentally change traffic movements throughout the area as Cork Port and Docklands traffic transfers to Ringaskiddy. We believe it is essential to wait until the new motorway access arrangements from Maryborough Hill are in place, and proven to function as intended, before adding potentially up to 1,000 additional residential units on this site upstream.

Despite these concerns, Cllr Terry Shannon confirmed that he intends to vote Yes to the rezoning. Cllrs Maryrose Desmond and Sean Martin advised that they would discuss the matter further before making their decision.

We are asking residents to please contact Cllr Maryrose Desmond and Cllr Sean Martin and  ask them to vote No to SSO1 SE2. This is not a campaign against housing — it is a community call for proper planning, sustainable growth and infrastructure that keeps pace with development.
