Today we met with Cllr Dan Boyle today at the site an he confirmed that he will vote against the rezoning. He also is confirmed that there is already enough land zoned for residential in the city already. Dan Boyle also confirmed that we need a majority vote on 13th July against the rezoning and that there is an awareness of the objections from our community. 3 of our 6 local South East Ward Councillors have confirmed that they will vote against the rezoning at this stage. We will be meeting with the 2 x South East Ward Fianna Fail Councillors next Wednesday 1st July at 5pm at the site.
In other news...
Today's announcement of Government funding for Cork Docklands shows exactly the type of development our campaign has been calling for.
The funding will unlock the regeneration of a 147-hectare brownfield site in the heart of Cork City, delivering thousands of new homes alongside more than 100 acres of parks and green spaces, walkable neighbourhoods, new sports facilities and a maritime activity centre.
As Taoiseach Micheál Martin said:
"Cork Docklands is one of the most exciting urban regeneration projects in Ireland... an important step in unlocking the key infrastructure needed to support the building of thousands of new homes, the creation of jobs and the development of new sustainable communities, right in the heart of the city centre."
This is precisely the approach we have been advocating throughout our campaign.
We are not opposed to housing. We recognise that Cork urgently needs more homes. However, those homes should be delivered through the regeneration of brownfield and already-zoned land, supported by the infrastructure, transport, amenities and public spaces that create thriving communities.
What we continue to question is why Greenbelt land on Maryborough Hill is being targeted for rezoning when significant opportunities like Cork Docklands, and enough other already-zoned lands across the city exist.
The Docklands demonstrates that sustainable growth and protecting our Greenbelt are not competing priorities. They can, and should, go hand in hand.
As the Council vote approaches on July 13th, we hope our elected representatives will support the kind of strategic, infrastructure-led planning that Cork deserves.
