Protect Devonshire countryside from Xlinks AI campus
The Issue
My wife and I moved to Great Torrington just seven months ago. I had been living as an expat in Spain, seeking a quieter lifestyle and upon returning to the UK, Torrington felt like the perfect place to make our home. The area offers picturesque scenery, a strong, engaging community spirit, and a peaceful environment where we could escape city life, urban stress, and enjoy healthier air. We chose to live here precisely because of its large open spaces, closer connections to nature, and a stronger sense of community. However, this tranquility is now under threat.
The proposed development by Xlinks to build an AI data campus in the space between Weare Gifford, Huntshaw, and Great Torrington is causing significant concern among residents. The project could have severe repercussions on our beloved Devonshire countryside. A development of this magnitude will disrupt the very qualities that make this area so special; it threatens the landscape, local wildlife, and the community dynamic that so many people, including new residents like us, cherish.
Development projects such as this can lead irreversible damage to natural environments. The construction process alone risks damaging landscapes that have been preserved and cherished for generations. With increased traffic, pollution, and noise, the character of Great Torrington and the surrounding areas could irreparably change. Local fauna and flora, which contribute to the biodiversity and natural beauty of the locale, may suffer significant harm, leading to a loss of habitat and biodiversity.
Moreover, the community of Great Torrington prides itself on its authenticity and camaraderie. An influx of construction alongside increased industrial presence could disrupt the local economy and societal balance, shifting it away from community-focused commerce and towards more industrial and business-oriented services.
We are calling upon the UK government to seriously reconsider and ultimately halt the plans initiated by Xlinks. It is essential to evaluate the environmental and societal impacts of this project comprehensively. Alternative sites, perhaps in less sensitive locations, should be considered to prevent unnecessary harm to our treasured countryside.
Let's stand together to preserve the spirit and landscape of Great Torrington. Please sign this petition to voice our concerns and urge the government to protect our countryside and communities from the encroachment of such damaging developments. Every signature counts to keep Devonshire's natural beauty and community life intact.
