Draper City has authorized the "surplussing" (interested in selling) of 217 acres mountain land at Deer Ridge.   The city is looking to raise funds to fix the road on Deer Ridge Drive, a road that was not built properly by the original developer.   The current motion approved by the city council makes area eligible for the development of 30 on 1/2 acre lots.

Instead of looking for viable alternatives to raise funds to reconstruct the road, 4 of 5 members on the city council voted in haste to surplus the land.  Despite conditions that would limit development to 15 acres, the city surplussed all 217 acres in question.

The biggest disappointment as that the Draper City Council could have moved to surplus a small part (15 acres) of the whole parcel and put the upper portions the mountain into a conservation easement. They could have easily saved put this issue to rest last night by listening to the will of the people.

There are several reasons to protect this land from development:

- The mountain is one of the last remaining wild open spaces on the Wasatch front and is home to several wildlife species.

- It is a multi-use area, currently enjoyed by hikers, mountain bikers and families.

- It is one of the largest off-leash dog areas between the Utah and Salt Lake Valley.

- Building additional homes in the area will have significant impacts with traffic, fire safety, water and of course to the wildlife.
