Protect Consumers from Unclear Recurring Subscription Charges
Protect Consumers from Unclear Recurring Subscription Charges
The Issue
I was deceived by PeopleFindersLLC. They initially advertised and it looked I was paying for $3.95 report (see first screenshot) and I was shocked to later discover a recurring monthly fee of $22.95 buried in their terms and conditions. Hundreds of consumers have reported similar experiences involving recurring subscription charges, refund disputes, confusing purchase flows, and privacy concerns. We ask State of California and other states to protect consumers from predatory subscription practices from businesses such as PeopleFindersLLC.
This practice of hiding recurring charges in fine print is not only deceptive but financially harmful to countless consumers like me.
Online businesses should be transparent and honest about their pricing. When signing up for services, customers should be clearly informed about any renewal charges or monthly subscriptions upfront. This vital information should not be concealed in dense legal jargon that no average consumer reads or understands.
According to a report from the Better Business Bureau, hidden fees are becoming a major source of complaints, affecting thousands of consumers nationwide. This deceptive practice undermines consumer trust and hurts honest businesses that are upfront about their charges.
We urge lawmakers to mandate that all online businesses prominently display any recurring charges or subscriptions before finalizing a purchase and before providing their payment information. This regulation would not only protect consumers but also promote fair competition among businesses.
