Water security across Kenya's Coast is under growing pressure.

Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale and Taita Taveta depend on interconnected water infrastructure that is essential to households, schools, health facilities, businesses and livelihoods.

We are deeply concerned by reports of significant financial challenges affecting water utilities, alongside infrastructure deterioration, high non-revenue water, illegal connections and high electricity costs associated with water pumping.

The consequences must not be allowed to fall on ordinary citizens through prolonged disconnections, unreliable water supply or unaffordable water bills.

Why Mzima Matters
For Taita Taveta, Mzima Springs is a lifeline.

Communities including those in Marungu Ward and other areas depend on the Mzima water system.

The proposed Mzima II Water Supply Project therefore represents an important opportunity to strengthen long-term water security for the Coast.

We call for Mzima II to be urgently prioritised alongside rehabilitation, protection and modernisation of the existing Mzima system.

Our Demands
We call upon the Government to:

Undertake an urgent and transparent assessment of the reported water utility debts.
Consider a debt waiver, restructuring, settlement, refinancing or other sustainable financial mechanism, subject to proper audit, verification and accountability.
Protect consumers from the consequences of institutional debt through avoidable disconnections and unaffordable water costs.
Urgently rehabilitate existing bulk water infrastructure.
Prioritise and accelerate the Mzima II Water Supply Project.
Address leakages, illegal connections, water theft and other sources of non-revenue water.
Develop measures to reduce the high energy costs associated with water pumping.
Strengthen coordination between National Government, County Governments, water utilities, Coast Water Works Development Agency and WASREB.
Publish clear information on debt, infrastructure rehabilitation, non-revenue water and Mzima II implementation milestones.
Ensure meaningful participation of young people and affected communities in decisions concerning Coast water security.
Our Position
We support accountability and financial discipline in the water sector.

However, institutional financial problems must not be resolved by transferring the consequences to citizens who had no role in accumulating those debts.

We need a solution built on:

Accountability.
Sustainable financing.
Infrastructure investment.
Efficiency.
Consumer protection.
Long-term water security.
