Protect Children from Unauthorised Filming by Strangers in Public Spaces
Protect Children from Unauthorised Filming by Strangers in Public Spaces
The Issue
Children deserve a safe and respectful environment environment online and in public.
Current UK law does not prevent individuals from filming or photographing children in public, leaving a serious safeguarding gap & exposes children to risks. We demand stonger legal protections for children against being filmed or photographed by strangers without parental consent in public spaces.
We propose reforms to protect children by making it unlawful to film or photograph children under 16 without parental consent, except exceptional circumstances. Create a new offence for persistent or suspicious filming of minors, enabling police investigation. Give parents the legal right to request deletion of non-consensual images. Extend data protection laws to cover private individuals processing images of minors. Amend harassment laws so a single unsettling filming incident can constitute harassment.
the UK law has not kept up with the digital age and we must act now to create vital safeguards against exploitation, fear, and misuse of children’s images.
