The Issue

I’m a grandmother, and I believe protecting children is one of the most important responsibilities we have as adults.

The moment that made me decide I could not simply scroll past this issue was learning that artificial intelligence has advanced to the point where it can create incredibly realistic sexual images involving children—and that our existing laws and legal precedent are struggling to keep pace with that technology.

A recent federal appeals court decision brought this issue into even sharper focus for me. The court held that, under existing Supreme Court precedent, the government could not criminalize the private possession of certain AI-generated obscene material when it did not depict a real person. At the same time, the court acknowledged how dramatically AI technology has changed and the difficult questions that creates for child protection.

That stopped me.

I kept thinking about our children and grandchildren and asking myself: Are we really going to wait until the technology becomes even more advanced before we act?

I don’t want to wait.

I understand that the Constitution matters. I understand that courts must follow existing precedent. But when technology creates circumstances our laws were never designed to address, I believe we have a responsibility to ask our elected officials to examine those laws and close dangerous gaps.

This isn’t about Republicans or Democrats.

This isn’t about attacking judges.

This is about children.

I believe Congress should strengthen federal protections against AI-facilitated sexual exploitation of children, protect real children whose images or likenesses are misused, give law enforcement appropriate tools to investigate these crimes, and require meaningful safeguards from technology companies.

We cannot allow technological advancement to move faster than our commitment to protecting children.

Children are not content.
Children are not a product.
Children are not a loophole.

I’m asking you to stand with me and raise your voice.

Please sign this petition, share it with your family and friends, and send it to your representatives.

Our children deserve better. Our laws need to keep up.

Pass the ENFORCE Act or comparable constitutionally sound legislation that closes federal gaps involving AI-generated CSAM and protects children from AI-facilitated sexual exploitation.
