Protect children. Ban the sale and supply of vapes in Ireland.
The Issue
As a concerned parent in Ireland, I am deeply troubled by the alarming rise in vaping among our youth. Every day, I witness firsthand the detrimental effects of vapes on young people's health and well-being. These devices are increasingly being used by teenagers, often with little understanding of the addictive nature of nicotine and the potential long-term health risks.
Vaping has often been marketed as a safer alternative to smoking, but recent studies indicate otherwise. According to a report by the Health Service Executive (HSE), there has been a significant increase in vaping among young people aged 15-24 in the past few years. This trend poses a serious public health concern, as the young are especially susceptible to the addictive properties of nicotine, which can impair brain development, attention, and learning.
Furthermore, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has found that liquids used in vapes often contain harmful substances aside from nicotine, such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, both of which have been linked to serious health problems. This adds another layer of risk to our children’s health.
The Irish Heart Foundation also highlights that vaping can act as a gateway to smoking traditional cigarettes, potentiating future tobacco use among teenagers. This is particularly worrying given the substantial progress we've made in reducing smoking rates in Ireland over the past decade.
Given these realities, it's imperative for the Irish government to take immediate action by banning the sale and supply of vapes. Such a measure would not only protect our youth from the clutches of addiction but also safeguard future generations from a myriad of health issues. By doing so, we would be prioritizing public health and preserving the well-being of our children.
This petition aims to compel lawmakers to recognize the growing threat of vaping among our youth and to implement a ban on these harmful products immediately. Let us rally together to make Ireland a safer place for our children. Stand with us in advocating for a healthier future.
Please sign this petition to urge the Irish government to ban the sale and supply of vapes, ensuring the protection of our youth and the safeguarding of public health.
