Protect Central Oregon's Forests: Remove Homeless Campers from USFS Lands!

Protect Central Oregon's Forests: Remove Homeless Campers from USFS Lands!
The Issue
As a resident of Central Oregon, I am deeply concerned about the increasing presence of homeless camps on United States Forest Service (USFS) lands in our region. These lands are not only a vital part of our natural heritage but also play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance and protecting our communities from forest fires.
I have personally witnessed the devastating consequences that can arise when homeless camps are allowed to persist unchecked. Last summer, a massive wildfire broke out near my neighborhood, threatening homes and wildlife alike. It was later determined that the fire originated from an unattended campfire at a nearby homeless encampment on USFS lands.
The USFS claims that they lack the authority to remove these campers, leaving them free to occupy and potentially endanger these precious public lands. This is unacceptable! We need immediate action to ensure the safety of our forests and protect our communities.
According to data from local authorities, there has been a significant increase in wildfires caused by human activity in recent years. In fact, nearly 85% of all wildfires in Central Oregon were human-caused between 2016-2020 (source: Local Fire Department Report). While not all fires can be attributed directly to homeless campers, their presence significantly increases the risk due to factors such as unattended campfires or improper disposal of flammable materials.
Moreover, allowing homeless camps on USFS lands poses serious environmental concerns. These areas are home to diverse ecosystems and sensitive wildlife populations that can be disrupted or harmed by human activities associated with camping. Additionally, improper waste management practices at these sites can lead to pollution of water sources and soil degradation.
It is essential for us as residents who cherish Central Oregon's natural beauty and value its ecological integrity to take action now. By signing this petition, we call upon the United States Forest Service to actively police and remove homeless campers from USFS lands in Central Oregon. We urge the USFS to collaborate with local authorities, non-profit organizations, and social service agencies to provide alternative solutions for those experiencing homelessness.
Together, we can ensure the protection of our forests, reduce the risk of devastating wildfires, and preserve the natural beauty that makes Central Oregon so special. Sign this petition today and let's make a difference!
