The Issue

The lighthouse in Cedar City has been a beloved part of my life and a key feature of this community since it was erected in 2000. Growing up, it was always my favorite place, and countless memories of my childhood are intertwined with it. I know I'm not alone in cherishing this landmark—it's held significant meaning for many residents in Cedar City.

While the lighthouse may not be classified as a historical structure due to its relatively recent construction, that does not diminish its value to our community. Upon its completion, it was promoted as one of the largest inland lighthouses standing at 88 feet tall, becoming an important part of our city's history. Its presence is a testament to the unique character of Cedar City, distinguishing it from other towns.

I understand that the expansion of the freeway is crucial for our city's growth and connectivity. Yet, I firmly believe that the preservation of our lighthouse can coexist with these necessary developments. There must be a solution that allows for both the progression of our infrastructure and the safeguarding of this symbolic asset.

I urge the city officials to explore alternatives that preserve the lighthouse while accommodating the freeway expansion. Options such as rerouting or adjusting the expansion plans can be discussed to keep the lighthouse intact.

Please join me in appealing to the city council to reconsider the demolition of the lighthouse. By signing this petition, you're standing with us in preserving a beloved symbol of Cedar City. Let us ensure that future generations can also experience the joy and memories that this lighthouse has brought to all of us. Sign this petition and help make a change!
