The Issue

Calvert, Alabama is a small town in Mobile county. It is a proud community where everybody knows everybody. Our beautiful rivers and lush woods are part of the same lands where the Choctaw settled during Indian removal, and remain today. This land defines us, shaping our daily lives, our stories, and our legacy. We only hope to protect our resources and heritage for the next generation, so that we can pass down not just land, but history as well.
However, the announcement of an AI data center in our vicinity could threaten such hope. Many building projects come with promises of jobs and infrastructure changes. However, in reality, years later seem to result in many sick workers who have given their lives to these companies. Also, long term jobs at data centers typically do not consist of the small town residents of the places they destroy.
This is not just another building project, but a potential crisis for our local ecosystem, our resources, and our way of life. AI facilities are notorious for consuming astronomical amounts of water, potentially draining millions of gallons every single day. They put pressure on local power grids, risking outages and significant hikes in energy costs for residents, small businesses, and agricultural sectors.
Additionally, the construction and operation of the center will likely bring along a rise in noise pollution (which could scare off animals and fish close to hunting grounds), increased traffic, and further environmental damage. It threatens to change the peaceful nature of Calvert's daily life. We are a community united by the tranquility of our surroundings, and we wish to keep it that way.
We must act now to stop these changes that could disrupt Calvert and surrounding small towns forever. Local leaders and stakeholders need to hear our voices united, expressing our serious concerns and proposing alternatives that align with our community's long-term welfare. Those options should not involve compromising our natural resources or our serene way of living.
Join us in standing up for our beloved home and our community's future. Sign this petition to demand a halt to the AI data center project until all risks are thoroughly assessed, alternative solutions are considered, and the community's voices are heard and respected. Together, we can ensure that Calvert remains the place we know and love.
