Protect Your Town Centre -Keep Parking Free.

The Issue

Parking charges are set to change in towns already struggling for footfall…

We might be talking about our town in this petition, Callington, and yet this could be your town too!

So are you a shopper, customer, friend, visitor, summer friend, fellow retailer or just annoyed that Councils cannot continue to offer something which is a draw for visitors to market towns?
Towns who are trying to remain alive for residents and visitors alike?

Councils who continue to say yes to more and more houses, which may be needed, but without encouraging a better infrastructure for those new residents, without doing anything to help encourage growth in their centres, but instead taking away incentives to visit town centres!

What’s it about?

One hour free parking is set to end in Zone B car parks and charges will be raised.

Cornwall County Council is planning to withdraw the one hour free car parking in Callington and other market towns and increase charges.

This threat to the businesses of our town will further encourage shoppers away from the high street, away from communities that so many of the independent stores create and could move more people towards online shopping, supermarkets and centres which have their own free parking.

Maintaining the 1-hour free parking is essential in order to support the ongoing vitality of the town centre.

Losing the one hour free will jeopardise the survival of many town centre businesses, who are facing very difficult trading conditions in the current economic climate.

Cornwall Council needs to think further ahead than it is with this decision and we need to encourage them to do this.

Reports have shown that availability and convenience of parking is by far and away the most important factor when choosing where to shop and visit.

Sensibly priced parking fees will benefit everyone, and in order for the town to remain a town, with an opportunity to welcome new businesses or encourage existing businesses to stay, to encourage residents and visitors to attend the town, ONE HOUR FREE must remain!
